The Year of the Fire Horse – A Journey Through Chinese Folklore

In Chinese folk tradition, the monster is not simply an alien presence lurking in the dark. It is part of society – a creature that emerges through the cracks when the moral or social order begins to fracture.

Golden Days and Nørrebro Teater invite audiences on a journey through Chinese folklore in the company of China experts Rakel Haslund-Gjerrild, Bo Ærenlund Sørensen and Astrid Møller-Olsen, alongside Amalie Bendixen, host of the podcast Astropod. Together, they explore what mythical creatures can tell us about the world that created them – and how they differ from the dragons, zombies and vampires of Western tradition.

The evening also features the performance entrance/d and the Post-celestial bootiquake by artist Yi Ten Lai and musician Harald Ture Ingvarsson. Combining Chinese lion dance with black metal, the performance offers an ecstatic and restless reinterpretation of the myth of Pixiu – a dragon-lion hybrid symbolising hunger and the endless accumulation of wealth.
